Be a part of a Central PA tradition and perform great works of the choral literature!
The Harrisburg Choral Society typically performs two major concerts per year, one in late fall/early winter, and one in the late spring. The Society may also perform smaller-scale concerts during the year, such as our March reflections concert.
Rehearsals typically begin in early September and conclude with the spring concert, with a break during the holidays. Due to changing COVID-19 requirements by the Grace Milliman Pollock Center for the Performing Arts, the HCS will be rehearsing at Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church in Etters, PA for the current semester. For the time being, the HCS will be rehearsing Monday evenings, from 7:30PM to 9:30PM.
Members are required to pay dues for each semester of the season (fall/spring). Members are expected to attend all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and concert performances. Members are also expected to acquire their concert attire (tuxedos for men, dresses for women purchased through the Society). Members are encouraged to help sell tickets to the concerts, and promote the ensemble through sales of concert program advertising space and patronage. Members are also encouraged to assist with organizational tasks and other volunteer opportunities (such as the Fundraiser Dinner or community singing events).
The HCS is aware of the increased exposure risk associated with ensemble singing, and we are taking whatever steps are necessary to keep our members and staff safe. The Harrisburg Choral Society is requiring all members, staff, and other involved persons to be fully vaccinated in order to participate in person for rehearsals and concerts. We are also asking singers to be masked during rehearsals and concerts as necessary based on changing conditions with the state of the virus. We are now practicing in a larger space than previously, in a facility with better active ventilation. We will be spacing singers during rehearsals. We will also be hosting “Virtual Rehearsals” on Zoom during practices for members who must miss rehearsals or who cannot attend. Our director has extensively researched best practices in conducting rehearsals, consulting with professional organizations such as the American Choral Directors Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Chorus America, and the CDC. The director will use discretion to take "breather breaks" and limit full group ensemble work when possible. View the details of our COVID-19 plan here.
Members of the Harrisburg Choral Society are expected to be able to follow the music, hold their own part accurately when others are singing around them, and to learn music quickly. While we are a volunteer organization of non-professional singers, we strive for excellence and our audition process is designed to ensure that new members can meet the expectation of the ensemble. For the brief audition with our music director, potential members will sing scales and arpeggios to check which voice part is most appropriate. Additionally, they should sing an excerpt from a prepared piece, which can be anything from a classical work, Broadway standard, or America the Beautiful. An accompanist is provided if needed (please bring an extra copy of the music). Sight-reading will also be requested. Entry into the ensemble is at the discretion of the music director. After admission, members can be asked to re-audition to ensure that the Harrisburg Choral Society is the right choral ensemble for them.
Auditions take place during the first 2-3 rehearsals of a semester (September and January). Mid-semester auditions are considered on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the music director.
