Join the Harrisburg Choral Society!
Be a part of a Central PA tradition and perform great works of the choral literature!
The Harrisburg Choral Society typically performs two major concerts per year, one in late fall/early winter, and one in the late spring. The Society may also perform smaller-scale concerts during the year, such as the Messiah Sing-along concert and Lenten season concert.
Rehearsals typically begin in early September and conclude with the spring concert, with a break during the holidays. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings, 7:30-9:30PM, at Camp Hill Presbyterian Church in Camp Hill. The Society also schedules dress rehearsals before concert events, typically at the concert venue. The Society will also set rehearsals for special events such as the Madrigal Dinner fundraiser.
Members are required to pay dues for each semester of the season (fall/spring). Members are also expected to help sell tickets to the concerts, and promote the ensemble through sales of concert program advertising space and patronage. Members are expected to attend all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and concert performances. Members are also expected to acquire their concert attire (tuxedos for men, dresses for women purchased through the Society). Members are also encouraged to assist with organizational tasks and other volunteer opportunities (such as the Madrigal Dinner fundraiser or community singing events).
A brief audition is required for membership in the Harrisburg Choral Society. You are asked to sing some scales and arpeggios and sing an excerpt from a prepared piece. This piece can be anything you are comfortable singing, from a classical work to a Broadway standard to America the Beautiful. An accompanist is present and will play the music if you bring an extra copy. Brief sight-reading, often on your voice part from a hymnal, may also be requested. Auditions are primarily for the music director to gauge your vocal range and quality, and general musical ability, to ensure proper part placement.
Auditions take place during the first 2-3 rehearsals of a semester (September and January). Mid-semester auditions are considered on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the music director.
