Join the Harrisburg Choral Society!

Due to the HCS suspending activities for 2020-2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be holding auditions in Fall 2020. We are planning to resume in Fall 2021, with auditions for prospective new members!

Be a part of a Central PA tradition and perform great works of the choral literature!

Concert Season

The Harrisburg Choral Society typically performs two major concerts per year, one in late fall/early winter, and one in the late spring. The Society may also perform smaller-scale concerts during the year, such as the Messiah Sing-along concert and Lenten season concert.

Rehearsals typically begin in early September and conclude with the spring concert, with a break during the holidays. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings, 7:30-9:30PM, at Camp Hill Presbyterian Church in Camp Hill. The Society also schedules dress rehearsals before concert events, typically at the concert venue. The Society will also set rehearsals for special events such as the Gala Dinner fundraiser.

Member Responsibilities

Members are required to pay dues for each semester of the season (fall/spring). Members are expected to attend all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and concert performances. Members are also expected to acquire their concert attire (tuxedos for men, dresses for women purchased through the Society). Members are encouraged to help sell tickets to the concerts, and promote the ensemble through sales of concert program advertising space and patronage. Members are also encouraged to assist with organizational tasks and other volunteer opportunities (such as the Gala Dinner fundraiser or community singing events).

Members of the Harrisburg Choral Society are expected to be able to follow the music, hold their own part accurately when others are singing around them, and to learn music quickly. While we are a volunteer organization of non-professional singers, we strive for excellence and our audition process is designed to ensure that new members can meet the expectation of the ensemble. For the brief audition with our music director, potential members will sing scales and arpeggios to check which voice part is most appropriate. Additionally, they should sing an excerpt from a prepared piece, which can be anything from a classical work, Broadway standard, or America the Beautiful. An accompanist is provided if needed (please bring an extra copy of the music). Sight-reading will also be requested. Entry into the ensemble is at the discretion of the music director. After admission, members can be asked to re-audition to ensure that the Harrisburg Choral Society is the right choral ensemble for them.

Auditions take place during the first 2-3 rehearsals of a semester (September and January). Mid-semester auditions are considered on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the music director.
