With a "bright, arching tenor" (Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle), Scott Joiner made his San Francisco Opera debut in the world premiere of Nolan Gasser's The Secret Garden in March 2013, giving "a splendid performance" (San Francisco Classical Voice) as a "jaunty Dickon Sowerby with a lovely tenor" (Classical Review).
Known for dynamic acting abilities and exciting performing, Joiner's repertoire includes character roles, leading tenor, and concert repertoire. Among numerous 2012/2013 appearances, Joiner returns to the Asheville Symphony Orchestra as the tenor soloist in the Mozart Requiem and Handel's Messiah (repertoire he also performs for the Harrisburg Choral Society), he performs in concert with the Hendersonville Symphony and in recital for the Colorado Music Festival.
Since his introduction to opera as a youth, Joiner has appeared with Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Knoxville Opera, Asheville Lyric Opera, the Opera Company of Brooklyn, American Opera Projects, the Intermezzo Opera Festival and Teatro Magnani di Fidenza in addition to performances with the Escher String Quartet, Bryan Symphony Orchestra and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
As a principal artist with Asheville Lyric Opera, Joiner sang nine roles over four seasons, including Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Nemorino (L'Elisir d'Amore), and Tamino (Die Zauberflöte). Other role highlights have included Goro (Madama Butterfly) for Knoxville Opera, Pedrillo (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) at Teatro Magnani, Prince Charmant (Cendrillon) and the title role in Albert Herring for the Intermezzo Opera Festival (under conductors Steven Crawford and J. David Jackson) and Wilson Ford (The Village Singer) for the Opera Studio at the Manhattan School of Music.
Winner of North Carolina's Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition (2011), Joiner is also a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions. In 2011, he created a one-man show, Shakespeare Sings!, featuring Shakespearean verse, arias and art songs, with veteran opera director Francis Cullinan. He was invited by Tony and Emmy Award-winning director George Faison to perform at the Inaugural Gala of NYC's Faison Firehouse Theater.
Recent recital appearances have included the Musical Monday series at the Historic Tennessee Theatre and the Wintergreen Music Festival (in cooperation with the Lotte Lehmann Foundation of New York City). He studied art song with Grammy-nominated pianist Warren Jones and has collaborated with composers such as Richard Danielpour, Steven Schwartz, Wang Jie and many others. He studied acting at Michael Howard Studios in NYC.
